Responsible Travel

Aarhus is the second-largest city in Denmark, with a substantial municipal population. It is located on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula. Today, Aarhus is the central hub for the trade industries, services, and tourism in Jutland and holds core importance for cultural and economic development.

For many reasons the city is on top of the bucket list for many travellers. Due to the influx of tourists it is important to conserve the environment and travel in an eco friendly manner. There are many ways to travel responsibly. Some of them include:

  • Using public transport: Travelling on public transport means less pollution created by individual cars and taxis. It is also a very budget friendly way of travelling. Bus tickets to get around through the city are 20 DKK, and 10 DKK for an under 16 age, as the price varies depending on how far you travel.
  • Use a bicycle: You can rent a bike from Bikes4Rent, or borrow a free city bike; all you need to do is insert a DKK 20 coin, which you get back when you return the bike in another station.
  • Dispose of trash in the right way: Avoid littering should go without saying but you should also dispose off your trash in a more responsible manner. Always put your recyclable trash in the right bin and try to recycle plastic bottles.
  • Try to book an eco friendly travel agent: If you do book a travel agent, go for an eco friendly one who will plan your trip in a more eco friendly way.

Air Quality and Pollution

The Air Quality Index ranks the air pollution level in Aarhus as good and the Air quality index is at 13 which is considered far better than other cities and countries. However the dominant pollutant in the air is PM 2.5 that are small irritants which can be dangerous for people who have respiratory issues. The pollutants in the air are caused by chemical emissions from vehicles and factories. This is why the government encourages people to use a bicycle and to walk. There are policies being enacted for a more sustainable environment but there is still a long way to go.

Respect the Culture

Denmark has a rich culture followed by a long history; Denmark's culture is defined in three aspects of Danish life - Simplicity, Equality, and Politeness. The people prefer to live a very uncomplicated life and much focus is not given on possession or high income, and bragging is considered rude.

Another central cultural aspect of Denmark is "Hygge"- a cozy feeling and snug during moments like vacations or holidays when friends are relaxing and comfortable. The people of Denmark embrace courtesy to a large extent; even while introducing, they often make a first name base with a handshake.

When using public transportation like in buses - do not sit beside a stranger or initiate a conversation with a local person or you would be deemed disrespectful. In Denmark, Men and Women are treated equally and get equal opportunities for positions and promotions.

  • Folk Music - The country's music is soothing and pleasing to the ears. Folk music is easily identified by linguistic, intonations, expressions, and dialects.
  • Folklore - In Denmark, the Folklore has been preserved from generation to generation through plays and storytelling, as it plays a significant role in Denmark's culture.

The Folklore includes references to the goblins, elves, and other non-human characteristics. In traditional Folklore, the elves were the beautiful women living underneath boulders and in hills.

  • Folk Costume - The traditional costumes in Aarhus date from the late 1700s and 1800s; styles and colors differ from one Danish region to another region, based on local customs. In the late 1800s, a painter named F.C. Lund launched a series using the images of regional costumes from Jutland, Funen, Mon, and Falster. All cultural history museums and folk dances in Denmark display the traditional costumes.
  • Food Culture - In recent years the Danish cultural food has become more diversified. A traditional lunchtime consists of Smorrebrod ( open Sandwiches ), kolde bords ( cold buffet, and there's also frikadeller (meatballs ), hakkebof ( chopped meat patties), polser ( hot long sausages ) and other typical food Culture.
