Respect the Culture

The culture of the Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the most diverse cultures in the continent. The culture here is heavily influenced by local traditions and also the cultures from abroad brought in during the colonization period. Whilst this is the case, the majority of the communities here have been able to retain their customs.

In terms of music, jazz music and rhumba have taken center stage. The most famous musicians include Le Grand Kallé and Franco Luambo Makiadi. They pioneered the blend of South American music styles with the modern African ones, commonly referred to as Soukous. They continued this style of music even to the year when they finally gained independence from the Belgians. The musicians were later supported by the Mobutu regime in Zaire, and many Congolese musicians became very successful on the international market for African popular music.

As the culture of DRC is very diverse, so are the handicrafts. Several of these handicrafts have been recognized on international platforms. There are over 100 communities in DRC with the souvenirs they have to offer includes textiles, masks, woven artifacts, and wooden or ivory statues. The most re-known artists in the country in terms of painting include Mavinga, Claudy Khan, Nshole, Lema Kusa, Henri Kalama Akulez, and Roger Botembe. In terms of sculpturing, they include Freddy Tsimba and Alfred Liyolo.
