These algae usually produce a red pigment that enables it to absorb light creating the energy used in the production of ATP.   • The Our Lady of Victories Cathedral: This parish is located in Dakar, the capital city of Senegal. It serves as the headquarters for all catholic churches in the country. It was created in top of a Muslim cemetery. This piece of land was gifted to the church by the national government. It was consecrated by Cardinal Jean Verdier, archbishop of Paris on 2 February 1936. It was the church where the former president, Leopold Senghor's funeral ceremony was conducted in 2001.

Getting There and Moving Around

Dakar is the capital city of Senegal. You can access the country by air, or by road, or by rail, or even be sea. It believed that Senegal has about 14,576 kilometers of road where 4,271 kilometers are paved, this is according to a research conducted on 1996. More developments are believed to have taken place ever since. Taxis are usually the best option to move around the capital city and even in other cities. They usually are usually black-yellow or blue-yellow in color. You are advised to negotiate the prices with the taxi drivers to get affordable prices.


Air

According to a study carried out in 1999, there are believed to bale around 20 airports in Senegal. The Blaise Diagne International Airport, located in Dakar, is the main international airport in the country. Airlines from various cities within the continent and even beyond usually fly into the country using this airport. These cities include Johannesburg, Atlanta, New York, and Washington DC. The other international airport in Dakar is the Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport which majorly functions as a cargo hub.

Bus

The national government of Senegal has continuously upgraded the road infrastructure in the country to try and connect the capital with major cities and towns in the country. The capital, Dakar is situated along several crucial highways in west Africa such as the Cairo-Dakar Highway and the Dakar-Lagos Highway. Buses are available in the country but are usually very unreliable and very uncomfortable to travel in. If you do not mind blending with the locals in a somehow congested bus, then you will enjoy traveling by bus in the country.

Train

Senegal is believed to have about 906 kilometers of rail within its borders. The rails are usually 1,000-millimeter gauges. This railway is part of the DakarNiger Railway which connects to Mali. Both cargo and passenger trains usually run on these rail tracks. The railway here in the country is operated by Trans rail and managed by Vecturis, a Belgian company.


Hitchhiking

Hospitality is an important aspect in the Senegalese culture. Thus hitchhiking here in the country is usually very easy. With the government upgrading the road infrastructure in the country, many motorists are starting to access most of the major cities and towns in the country if you happen to meet a motorist en-route to your destination, you can flag down the car. It has a deep-draft structure and 640-foot-wide access channel allowing sea vessels to access the port at any point. Sustainable Shopping

The national government of Senegal has been making effort to eradicate plastics in the country by introducing and implementing policies that ban the use of plastics in the country. Designers in the country have also started embracing materials that produce zero waste. Clothes usually have a life cycle and it's upon its completion that these are concerned about. They have held several fashion galas with the aim of creating awareness on the importance of embracing zero waste materials in the fashion and design industry in the country.


Recycling

The UN has been working hand-in-hand with the national government of Senegal to try and reach an amicable solution to the waste scourge in the country. They are channeling funds to be used in setting up more recycling centers as the ones that are already exists to are underperforming. Waste pickers here in Mbeubeuss, the largest dumpsite in Senegal, have also take it upon themselves to conduct the recycling business. There are a lot of families living in this dumpsite to the extent that some were even born and raised here. The strong men and youth in this dumpsite usually collect recyclable metal and sell them to scrap metal middle men. Some even decide to sell it themselves. Women and children on the other hand, are less strong than their counterparts, thus they usually collect plastics and organic waste. They usually wash these plastics and then sell them as reusable plastics. For the organic waste, they usually collect them then sell them as fodder to cattle owners in the area.


Waste

Mbeubeuss is the largest and the main dumpsite in the whole of Senegal. It is located in the outskirts of the capital, Dakar. The country has been facing a huge problem with solid waste in the country mostly comprising of paper, glass, and plastics. These wastes usually overflow in collection bins thus end up strewn along the city streets. The government has tried to introduce more waste collection trucks but the amount of the waste generated usually supersedes the amount that is disposed of. The UN has warned that if this situation in Mbeubeuss is not addressed, this dumpsite could grow to triple its size in thirty years. Several families have been living at this dumpsite and have been trying to make a living by collecting recyclable waste here. The world Bank has come in and rolled out the Municipal Waste Management Program (PROMOGEDE) in the country to sort out the waste menace in the country and also to reduce the health risks waste pickers here usually expose themselves to.


Work and Study Abroad

Senegal is country located in West Africa. Its capital Dakar has continued to show promise in growth and development thus attracting various investors and expatriates into the country to establish new businesses here in the capital and even in other cities in the country. Many investors are showing promise to continue coming into the country and investing in existing business opportunities. The United Nations has also set up an office here in the capital.

United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). This office is the headquarters for combating drugs and crime both in Central and West Africa. It coordinates operations in 22 countries in these two regions. It also acts as the link to ECOWAS.


Exchange Student

The education sector in Senegal has continued to show great promise and this has not gone unnoticed by the international community. Several international students both from within the continent and beyond are enrolling into universities found here in the country to further their studies and research. Some of view the universities found here in the country include:

  • Cheikh Anta Diop University: It is also referred to as the University of Dakar, is located in Dakar, the capital city of Senegal. This university is named after the Senegalese physicist, historian and anthropologist Cheikh Anta Diop. Its curriculum coincides with that of French education system. Scholars get to undertake either an oral or written test or both at the end of the year. Every course here is taught in French with the exception of language courses.
  • Gaston Berger University (GBU): It also known as the L'Université Gaston Berger (UGB). It is situated in Saint-Louis in Senegal. It is one of the pioneer universities to be established in the country. It was named in December 1996 to honor Gaston Berger who is a French-Senegalese philosopher
  • Université du Sahel (UNIS): This university is situated in Dakar, the capital city of Senegal. It was established in 1998.
  • Ziguinchor University: This university is situated in Ziguinchor in Casamance, Senegal. It was established in 2007.

Université de Thiès (UT). This university is situated in Thies, Senegal. It was established in 2007.


Au Pair

Although Senegal is showing promise of being one of the great countries in Africa, still a majority of the population is unemployed. Many have now decided to sign up for domestic jobs in the urban areas in the country especially the capital. Most of these job seekers are usually from the rural areas and they move to the urban areas seeking these jobs. Several organizations inspired by the communities have decided to train these women and girls who comprise the majority of these job seekers. Some of the trainings offered include first aid. The Senegalese who live in the upper social class usually prefer locals to be their house maids. Several foreigners have been enrolled in this system and you might be lucky too. You are advised to enroll in legitimate websites that connect you to an authentic employer in Senegal. A majority of the population aim to seek these care giving jobs in European and Middle Eastern countries.


Volunteering

There are several volunteering organizations already working in Senegal and they will be more than happy to have you on board. They include:

  • Staesen: This volunteering organization was established in 2012 in Dakar, the capital city of Senegal. Its aim is to improve the living standards of families here in the country via development programs.
  • Reseau des Migrants Entrepreneurs au Senegal (REMES): This NGO comprises of many entrepreneurs in the country who are migrants. They help better the lives of fellow migrants in the country by sharing business ideas and also some resources with them.
  • Su-Kaaya: This volunteering organization is an NGO working hand-in-hand with the education ministry in Senegal. They mostly target in training young girls, mostly in high school level, into competent problem solvers. They aim to transform them into role models for the society.
  • Queen Sheba Village, Inc: This NGO is a registered volunteering organization in Senegal that is aimed at improving the education status for women and girls in the community. They also uplift them socially and counsel them through empowerment programs.
  • The National Association of Albinism in Senegal (ANAS): This organization was established in 1997. It has been fighting for the rights of people living with Albinism in Senegal since its inception.
  • Association Internationale pour Médina-Mary (AIMM): This volunteering organization is an NGO that has been working to improve various sectors in Senegal including health, education, and environmental sectors in the country.
