Responsible Travel

Traveling responsibly while in Seychelles will go a long way in preserving this popular tourist destination. While exploring different places and the general idea of tourism is great, it is also harmful for the environment because of the way tourists travel today. It is of utmost importance to be a responsible traveller especially when we are at the verge of a climate disaster.

  • Choosing the right transport method: A major part of your travel experience includes discovering every nook and cranny of the city. While you will have transport options like private cars and taxis at your disposal you need to know that not only do they contribute to more congestion and traffic pollution but also emit harmful gases into the environment. So, choose options like walking, cycling, electronic and public transportation in general.
  • Trying local food: A huge part of the local culture is the traditional food that is offered at the local traditional restaurants and by street food vendors. Instead of just sticking to international fast food franchises that contribute to so much waste being produced in the world, you should try the local options. Not only will it help the local economy but also will directly help the families whose sole source of earning are these small food businesses.
  • Do not throw waste: As an eco-friendly traveler, you need to promote sustainable living as much as possible in the city to motivate not only fellow tourists but local people. When you visit any tourists attractions especially city parks, make sure you do not throw any food wrapper and do not just stop at that but if you see any trash, pick it up and throw it in the dustbin. It might look like a very small thing to do but has a huge impact on people watching especially the children present in the park since they learn and mimic the behaviour of other people around them.
  • Choose a green hotel: Plenty of accommodations are available in the city that provide you with a top-notch experience but instead of choosing them, you can pick green hotels for your stay. They use eco-friendly measures to reduce the pollution and waste of the city. This is one of the great ways to contribute towards the city to keep it safe and clean.
  • Shop local: In order to support local craftsmen and artisans always shop local. During your trip to the city, you will come across small shops and food stalls in almost every lane of the city. If you want to have an unforgettable experience in the city, then buy goods and handicrafts from these shops. This will not only help you to save a lot of money but you will be supporting a lot of local people who are dependent on their small businesses to earn a livelihood.

Air Quality and Pollution

The air quality in Seychelles is above internationally accepted levels due to the large water surface surrounding and even traversing the country's islands. The natural vegetation found here creates the amazing clean air found here in the country. The major cause of pollution in Seychelles is solid waste. Since it is quite expensive to transport waste from one island to another in the country, local authorities have had to devise means to handle wastes produced in their respective regions.

Respect the Culture

In terms of art, Seychelles usually has a diverse group of artists whose artworks are inspired by the beautiful islands of the country. The National Art Gallery of Seychelles was commissioned in 1994 during the commissioning of the National Cultural Center. Both the National Library and the National Archives are also housed in this cultural center. In this center, art pieces and works of local artists, painters, and sculptors are preserved and displayed to showcase the creativity talent in the country. After the country gained independence in 1976, artists began their work, freely expressing themselves in their artworks. The natural beauty and resources of the country have been the greatest inspiration to these local artists. Sculptors have gone ahead and done their work using stone, cartonnage, wood, and bronze.

Music and dance has always been a very important aspect of the culture of Seychelles. Traditional and cultural events that are held in the country usually have traditional music and dance embedded in them. The music that is played here in the country is heavily influenced by local and European cultures. Various instruments are usually used including stringed instruments and even drums such as Tam-Tam and Tambour. The guitar and violin are foreign instruments that were later embedded in the music of the country. Folk music is among the many music genres found here in the country that is heavily influenced by African rhythms and instrumentation. They include the polka, the zez and the bom, the mazurka, and the European contredanse. Other influences originated from Taarab, Arcadian music, French folk and pop, Polynesian music, sega from Mauritius, and Indian music. Contombley, a percussion type of music is among the most popular genres here in Seychelles. In terms of dance, the Sega dance is the most popular dance in the country's culture. It usually involves swaying of the hips and shuffling of the feet. The Moutya traditional dance is also famous amongst communities. This dance was usually used during the slavery era when the slaves used this dance to expresb their dissatisfaction.

The staple foods of Seychelles are mostly seafoods including fish and shellfish delicacies. These meals are usually served with rice. The fish delicacies are prepared in different styles such as grilling, baking, steaming, and also smoked and salted fish delicacies are available. The curry delicacies here are usually among the top of the list when acknowledging the local cuisines. Other staple foods found in the country are breadfruit, coconut, and mangoes. Fresh flowers are usually garnished over these meals.

In terms of media, the country's main daily newspaper is the Seychelles Nation which usually covers recent happenings in the country and broadcasts the government's opinions only. The rest of the political parties use other newspapers including the Regar. International magazines and newspapers are usually available in various stores across the country. These newspapers are majorly written in Seychellois Creole, English, and French. The primary radio and television network is managed by the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation where local news are usually aired and even the discussion programs, all of which are aired in Seychellois Creole language. Programs are usually aired from 3 pm to 11:30 pm during the weekdays and even more hours over the weekends. English and French language TV programs arv usually aired in the country.
