  • Koutammakou: This cultural landscape was considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. It is believed to be the land of the Batammariba. Here, you will find traditional mud tower-houses, which have still remained the style of living here to date. These mud houses are known to be the national symbol of the country.   • The Akodessawa Fetish Market: This market is situated in the Akodessawa district in Lomé, the capital city of Togo.   • The Palace of the Governors: It is believed to be initially the residence of the President of Togo. It is situated in Lomé, the capital city of Togo. Cascade de Womé

National Parks

The national government appointed the Foundation Franz Weber to run this park for a period of 25 years, from 1999 to 2015. This park was formed as a result of the merge of two reserve forests, Fazao and Malfakassa, covering 1,620 square kilometers and 300 square kilometers of land, respectively. The Fazao area in the park contains the majority of the wildlife here, while the Malfacassa area is good for hiking.
  • Oti-Kéran National Park: It is situated in Kara, Togo, towards the north of the country. There exists only a single road that goes through this place. There is some history related to this park where it is believed that during the formation of this park, locals who originally lived here were forcefully evicted without their consent and were not even compensated. Furthermore, wild animals such as elephants invaded the farmlands here, destroying crops. All these events resulted in a spike in hunger and poverty in the area. In 1990, when the country fell into disarray due to political differences, these communities that were forced out of their lands decided to invade the park and slaughtered many wild animals causing massive environmental destruction. The government has been trying to recuperate the park to its former state.
  • Fosse aux Lions National Park: This park is located in the Savanes region in Togo. It covers a total area of 16.5 square kilometers of land. It was initially a reserved forest during its inception in 1954. There is a small town in this park, Tandjouaré town.

  • The Monument de L'Independance: This monument was constructed to commemorate the country's liberation from the French colonial rule in April 1960. Cities

  • Lomé: It is the capital city of Togo. It is usually famous for its palm-lined coastline. Here, you will be able to find the Independence Monument, Palace residential houses, the Akodésséwa Fetish Market, and the National Museum of Togo.

Sokodé. It is the second-largest city in Togo. It is the capital of the Centrale Region. It is located approximately 339 kilometers from the capital, Lomé.

  • Kpalimé: It is located in the southwestern part of the country. It is situated in the Plateaux Region, where most of the coffee and cocoa farms in the country are found. Mount Agou is located close to this city.

Atakpamé. It is believed to be the fifth-largest city in the country in terms of population. It is located in the Plateaux Region. It is located approximately 161 kilometers from the capital, Lomé.


Getting There and Moving Around

The national government of Togo has put in a lot of effort to improve the road conditions in the country. Air

Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport. It is also referred to as Lomé-Tonkin International Airport. It is the large3and the busiest airport in the country. Bus

Many of the roads in the country have been improved thanks to the efforts of the national government and international donors. Buses, however, are not very common in the country. This does not mean that they are totally non-existent as there are several coaches usually ferrying passengers to longer destinations in the country. The most popular coaches ferrying passengers in the country belong to the Climatize Bus company. The most common route that they usually travel is the one from Lomé to Cinkasse. These coaches are usually air-conditioned.


Train

The country has a railway network, but there are no operational trains in the country at the moment.


Hitchhiking

Not a majority of the locals here own cars, but most of the motorists who do are usually friendly. Hitchhiking is easy in Togo as if you find a driver en-route to your destination, you can be taken close to your stop; if not directly to your stop, you will get to interact with these locals here with ease along the journey.


Others

The Mono River usually provides an alternative mode of transport that one can use to access various destinations in the country. This river is highly dependent on the amount of rainfall experienced during a season. It is 50 kilometers long, and small boats are usually used to sail on this river.

The ministry of environment in the country has rolled out the Sustainable Development and Nature Protection program aimed at protecting the environment from the adverse effects of solid waste. This program is aimed at enabling up to 2,300 households to be able to get waste collection services. They also aim to treat most of the solid waste produced in Aného before it is finally disposed of.
