She ceased her service in 1873 after the launching of the HMS Devastation, a more advanced warship, and was placed in reserve in 1875. She was officially decommissioned in 1883 and was turned into a depot ship. In 1904, she was assigned to the Royal Navy's torpedo training school. She was later converted into an oil jetty in 1927 where she served until 1979 where she was handed over to the Maritime Trust for renovation. This renovation process lasted for 10 years with some of her features being completely recreated. Upon completion of this restoration process, she returned to Portsmouth where she has been converted to a museum since 1987.
